Fit more in a smaller unit

  • Stack boxes of the same size, heavy ones at the bottom, up to the ceiling.
  • Stand sofas on end and take tables apart, legs off.
  • Leave a path down the middle, so you can reach the back without unpacking the front.
  • Put what you’ll want first near the door.
  • Number every box and keep a list of what’s in each one.

Our free storage unit inventory list keeps track of what’s in each box and where it sits, and the QR storage labels show a bin’s list when you scan it.

Find anything in the unit without unpacking it

BoxTrack gives each box a QR label. Snap what goes in, and later scan the label to see everything inside, with photos, or search every box at once from home.

Questions

What size storage unit do I need?

It depends on what’s going in more than on the size of your home. As a guide: a 5x5 holds boxes and a few small things, a 5x10 a studio, a 10x10 a one-bedroom apartment, a 10x15 a two-bedroom home, a 10x20 a three-bedroom home and a 10x30 four or five bedrooms. The calculator above works it out from your rooms and boxes.

What size storage unit for a 1-bedroom apartment?

Usually a 10x10, about half a one-car garage. A 5x10 can do if you’re storing little furniture, and a 10x15 if you have a lot.

What size storage unit for a 2 or 3-bedroom house?

A 10x15 for most two-bedroom homes and a 10x20, the size of a one-car garage, for most three-bedroom ones. Add a size for a garage full of tools, a lot of boxes or big appliances.

How tall are storage units?

Many are about 8 feet high, but it varies, so ask. Stacking up to the ceiling is how you fit a home into a smaller unit.

How do I find things in a storage unit later?

Number every box, keep a list of what’s in each one, and note where it sits in the unit. Our free storage unit inventory list does it on paper or in Excel. BoxTrack does it on your phone: snap what goes in each box, stick on its QR label, and search all of them at once.
