We picked these rows and we make BoxTrack, so read it with that in mind. Every fact links to its source below.

Where ToteScan is stronger

It's a free, single-purpose tote app with ordered labels and Alexa support. If all you want is to know which tote holds the camping gear, it may be all you need.

Where BoxTrack is stronger

Less typing, thanks to photo AI, and more uses for the same list: insurance values, a PDF report, a move with weights and check-in, and sharing with people who don't have the app.

Things to know about BoxTrack

It's new, and it's a web app with no App Store download. It can't import your ToteScan inventory or any other app's. The free plan is 1 box with up to 5 items, so a garage full of totes needs a paid plan, with a 72-hour free trial.

More: QR code labels for storage bins and QR labels vs writing on boxes.

The details

Why this comparison

If you've got a garage, attic or basement full of plastic totes, ToteScan is one of the apps you'll find. It does one job, labeling totes so you know what's in them, and it's free to download. We make BoxTrack, which does that job too, along with a few others. Here's an honest comparison.

ToteScan

ToteScan is for households labeling storage totes. According to its App Store listing, it's a free app with labels sold in the app: you can print its labels yourself or order them pre-printed. Totes can sit inside other totes. It also works with Alexa.

According to an App Store data site, you can optionally scan a product's barcode to fill in its title and image, and you can export your inventory as a PDF, CSV or HTML file. It's on iPhone; Android is reported by Deseret News, and a Google Play listing shows up on similarweb. A web version, photo AI and an insurance-specific report were not found.

BoxTrack

BoxTrack runs in the browser on any phone or computer, with nothing to install. Make a box for each tote, bin or moving box, and snap what goes in. AI fills in names, quantities and replacement values, and on Plus and Unlimited, a photo of the open tote lists everything in it at once. You can scan barcodes too, and note where a tote sits (back wall, top shelf).

Labels print on standard sticker sheets, color-coded, and any phone camera opens the box's list, so a family member doesn't need an app to check a tote. Search "Christmas lights" and BoxTrack tells you which box they're in.

It also keeps used and replacement values, so the same inventory can back up an insurance claim. On Plus and Unlimited you get a PDF claim report with every photo and value, Excel and CSV export, and sharing with family. For a move, there are box weights and a moving-day check-in.

Ready-made labels or your own printer?

This is a practical difference. ToteScan sells labels you can have printed for you, which is handy if you don't own a printer or want something tougher than paper stickers. BoxTrack prints on standard sticker sheets from any home printer, so you can make more whenever you add a bin, but you need the printer and the sheets.
