Tips for pricing
- Price everything. Many shoppers won’t ask, and walk on instead.
- Use round numbers: 25¢, 50¢, $1, $2, $5. It makes change and haggling quick.
- Start a little above the least you’d take. People like to haggle.
- Put the same price on a table or a bin (“Everything $1”), or sell clothes by the bag.
- Plug in anything electric, so shoppers can see it works.
- Keep a free box at the end of the driveway for what you just want gone.
- Drop prices in the last hour. Whatever’s left after that, give away.

Questions
How do I price garage sale items?
A common rule of thumb: about a quarter to a third of what it cost new, for things in good shape, and less for well-used ones. Small things go for round prices: 25¢ to $2 for books, dishes, toys and clothes. Price everything, since many shoppers won’t ask.
What should I charge for clothes at a garage sale?
Usually $1 to $5 for adult clothes and 50¢ to $2 for kids’ clothes, with coats and jackets a bit more. Selling by the bag, like $5 for all you can fit, moves a lot of clothes fast.
How do I price furniture at a garage sale?
About a quarter of what it cost new, more if it’s nearly new or a known brand, less if it’s worn. Put a tag on each piece, and say whether you’ll take offers.
Should I use price tags or color dot stickers?
Either works. Tags show the price on each thing. Dots are quicker: a color for each price, with a sign saying what each color costs. The tags on this page come in a color for each price, so they work as both.
Can I sell anything at a garage sale?
Check your town’s rules for a permit and signs. Check kids’ things like cribs, car seats and toys on the CPSC’s recall list at cpsc.gov/Recalls: selling a recalled product is against federal law.
What do I do with what doesn’t sell?
Give it to a charity shop, put it in a free box, or list the better things online. BoxTrack keeps what’s left with a photo and price for each thing, and gets each one ready to post on Facebook Marketplace.
