Where Under My Roof is stronger

It's a native Apple app from a maker with two decades in this one category, and your data sits in an iCloud account you already control. It tracks home maintenance, which BoxTrack doesn't do at all. And it can import CSV, so if your inventory is already in a spreadsheet, you can bring it in. BoxTrack can't import from other apps or files.

Where BoxTrack is stronger

Photos fill in the item for you, which helps most with things that have no barcode: furniture, clothes, tools, decor. It works on whatever phone each person in the house has. And it's built for boxes, so it doubles as a moving or storage inventory with labels anyone can scan with a phone camera.

Things to know about BoxTrack

It's new, it's a web app with no App Store download, and it doesn't import from Under My Roof or any other app. The free plan is 1 box with up to 5 items. A whole home needs a paid plan, with a 72-hour free trial.

The details

Why this comparison

Under My Roof Home Inventory+ comes from Binary Formations, which has made home inventory software since 2005. It's the successor to their long-running Home Inventory app for the Mac. We make BoxTrack, a much newer app. Here's how the two compare, and who should use which.

Under My Roof

Under My Roof runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and syncs through your own iCloud account. It covers the house as well as what's in it: home maintenance sits next to the inventory. You can add items by scanning a UPC, EAN or ISBN barcode, and it can make barcodes for your own things. It has customizable reports and help with insurance and claims, and CSV import and export.

According to AlternativeTo, it's free to download and try, limited to 10 items. If you used Binary Formations' older Home Inventory app, Under My Roof can import that data, which makes it the obvious next step for those users. Android, a web version, photo AI and box labels were not found.

BoxTrack

BoxTrack runs in the browser on any phone or computer, Apple or not, with nothing to install. You make a box for each room, closet or bin and photograph what's in it. AI fills in the name, quantity and replacement value, and one photo of a shelf or open box can list several things at once. You can scan barcodes too.

Each item keeps its photo, the date you added it, used and replacement values, and a serial number and purchase date if you add them. On Plus and Unlimited, you get a PDF claim report with every photo and value, Excel and CSV export, and sharing with family, view-only or editable.

BoxTrack also does the box side of things: color-coded QR labels on standard sticker sheets, boxes inside boxes, box weights against a mover's or airline's limit, and a moving-day check-in that shows which boxes haven't come off the truck.
