BoxTrack vs Nest Egg Inventory for a home inventory
Nest Egg is an iPhone and iPad home inventory app that keeps your data on the device and fills in items from their barcodes. BoxTrack is a browser app that fills them in from photos. How to choose.

if you use an iPhone or iPad, want your inventory kept on the device with no account, and most of what you own has a barcode on it.
if you want photos to fill in things that have no barcode (furniture, clothes, tools, art), want to use it on Android or a computer too, or need labels for boxes and bins.

Things to know about BoxTrack
It's new, and it's a web app with no App Store download (on iPhone you add it to your home screen). It can't import a Nest Egg CSV or any other app's export, so you'd start by snapping your rooms. The free plan is 1 box with up to 5 items, and a whole home needs a paid plan, with a 72-hour free trial.

The details
Why this comparison+
Nest Egg - Inventory is an iPhone and iPad app that takes a simple, private approach: your inventory lives on your iPhone or iPad, and scanning a product's barcode fills in the details. We make BoxTrack, which works the other way round in a few places. Here's an honest look at both.
What Nest Egg does+
According to its App Store listing, Nest Egg runs on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and your data stays on the device. Scan a product's UPC barcode and it fills in the name, description and a photo. You can AirPrint your inventory, email items to your insurance agent, and, according to its Spanish listing, get a summary report by category and location. It exports to CSV and to HTML with images. Importing from CSV is only in the full version.
There's a free Lite version that caps how many items you can add, and a separate Nest Egg - Inventory In Cloud app aimed at business stock. Android, a web version, photo AI and box labels were not found.
The main thing to like: no account to set up, and a barcode scan does the typing for anything still in its packaging or with a code on the back.
What BoxTrack does+
BoxTrack runs in the browser on any phone or computer, with nothing to install. You make a box for each room, closet or bin and snap what's in it. AI fills in the name, quantity and replacement value from the photo, and a photo of a whole open box or shelf can list every item in it at once. It can scan barcodes too.
Each item keeps its photo, the date you added it, its used and replacement values, and a serial number and purchase date if you add them. On Plus and Unlimited you get a PDF claim report with every photo and value, and Excel and CSV export. Every box can have a QR label printed on standard sticker sheets, and scanning it with any phone camera opens its list.
Your inventory is stored securely online rather than only on your phone, which means a lost or broken phone doesn't take your inventory with it.
Data on the device, or online?+
This is the real choice between the two. Keeping data on the device is private and simple, but a home inventory is mostly needed after something has gone wrong, like a fire or a burglary, and your phone can go with everything else. If you pick Nest Egg, export a CSV or HTML copy now and then and keep it somewhere outside the house. If you pick BoxTrack, the copy is online already, and you can still export a PDF or spreadsheet to keep yourself.
